Women in the WNBA
If you are an avid scoop reader, you must know that basketball is widely discussed in the sports section. If you read the scoop and also enjoy basketball, congrats! We've now become friends. In all seriousness, the WNBA draft was held the 14th of april on The Shed at Hudson Yards, Manhattan. This is a really important event because of the recognition it gives to women and all of the great players that were drafted and will continue on to make history on the WNBA, it also gives visibility to basketball as a sport for women so that young girls can become interested in a heavily male dominated sport.
One of the top picks for the draft was of course Paige Bueckers, she was a player at the University of Connecticut and got the spotlight by leading her team to their 12th NCAA championship title. Paige is of course a strong leader, she plays in the position of guard and was Dallas Wings’s first choice, not to mention she was also the first choice throughout the whole draft. She averaged, throughout her collegiate career, 19.9 point per game, 4.4 rebound and 2.1 steals giving her a starting position in all 38 games.Paige Buckers, or “Paige Buckets”, as her teammates used to call her, has won several competitions throughout her whole career, some even recognizing her as the number one player in various tournaments. Its really not surprising how she got drafted as easily, with all the effort she has put into the sport.
The WNBA's second pick was Dominique Malonga who will play on the Seattle Storm this coming season. Dominique is a french basketball player who is recognized for being an olympic silver medalist. She plays as a center and has played in the French national team and made history for her home country since no other female french basketball player had achieved a title in the WNBA since Isabelle Fijalkowski in 1997.She has competed on the Euroleague with the LDLC Asvel and has earned multiple titles because of her great ability on the sport, for example she received the All-star 5 on the women’s U17 Women's basketball world cup and the all star in BWB Europe 2022 women, both in 2022.
The last player mentioned in this article is named Georgia Amoore, who was picked 6th by the Washington Mystics, earning her a really high position in the draft. Amoore plays as a guard and has played in both the University of Kentucky and Virginia Tech. She is originally from Australia and went on the play collegiate basketball in the University of Kentucky,as every women mentioned in the article she has earned multiple prices like the Nancy Lieberman point guard of the year in 2024 and the All Sec first team. Georgia turned her team’s faith and led it to winning multiple games throughout her whole career, making 2,460 points throughout the season in the University of Kentucky.
Finally, good luck for all these wonderful women and the best of wishes for their new basketball career. I hope they achieve more recognition for women's sports and allow girls all around the world to feel safe and enjoy playing sports such as basketball.
